Google is making an update to their search algorithm by implementing a more mobile focused web search. And why wouldn’t they? More and more of Google users are searching on mobile. I know that personally; I use my phone to search everything! The internet is buzzing with what they are calling “Mobilegeddon” and how it will affect your Search Engine ranking with Google.

It is becoming more and more important to have mobile-friendly and responsive websites and luckily, we at Redman have been providing mobile options for our client’s for years! This being said, it is hard to say how much this update will affect real estate websites specifically until the update has been made and the impact starts to show.

Here are 3 of Google’s Algorithm Update Practices to better inform you of how Google works.

  1. Google keeps details about the changes to itself. The updates that are proposed are just broad sweeping information, and at this point, since the updates have not been launched, most of what we are exposed to is speculation.
  2. Google doesn’t disclose exact details about the algorithm changes, in part because by telling people exactly how it works it would allow individuals with this information to find areas they can exploit and gain an unfair advantage over websites with rich, unique and relevant content.
  3. Once the changes have launched and begin to impact rankings long term (algorithms often need to be tweaked once real-use feedback is received) then people in the SEO industry will begin testing the algorithm more methodically to try and determine more specifically what the “rules” are. Once launched, SEO experts will be able to determine how important this update actually is to your search ranking.

It is more important than ever to have a responsive and mobile friendly website as Google is expected to give users the best experience with the most relevant websites for their search. That said, “Mobilegeddon” may turn out to be “mobile-not-actually-the-end-of-your-SEO”. We won’t know until the update has been made and tested.

By using SEO best practices, you can help your website rank with search engines regardless of its mobile capability.
