Needless to say, .COM has become a very popular domain extension. It’s history dates back to 1985, when the first .COM registration happened.

This year marked a quarter century since .COM’s slow beginning. As we know, not everyone jumped on the idea of the internet. Unlike .CA, it took .COM 12 years to reach one million registrations. After 1997 came the “.COM boom.” An astounding 20 million names registered in a two year time span. In this time, domains of celebrities and famous companies were registered by people looking to sell them for a high price. The term “cybersquatting” was born from the “.COM boom.” To combat cybersquatting, numerous internet laws were passed internationally and implemented. In the years to come, .COM registrations slowed down; however, the rapid growth rate helped secure .COM’s place as the most popular domain extension in the world. Since then, it continues to grow at a much slower pace and is recognized everywhere. While .COM originated in the United States, many Canadian and international websites use the domain.
