Domain Series

This is the second blog to the series. The blog prior to this was:
1. Domain Series- A REALTOR’S Home

A domain name is used to easily identify a website in the internet world. Such as: www.redmantech.com.

With domains, the early bird gets the worm. Just like there can’t be two houses with the same address, there can only be one website with that name. Before registering your domain, you must check that it has not been taken. (Don’t worry, Redman Tech will do that legwork for you). Below is some well-known online terminology used- the nuts and bolts of your online home:

Domain extensions

Common Terminology

Domain: A domain is like a phone number within your online house, you can set up a physical telephone in your kitchen and one in your computer room. If you use the computer room as a home office and require a separate phone line, that means you have two separate domains that lead to different areas of one “house”. Domains have no SEO value like a website does and just like a telephone contract, you must renew your domain after a period of time.
***Please note: Domains cannot be changed.***

Website: Further expanding on the same analogy we used above, a website would be like the physical device by which you answer phone calls i.e: cellular phones or wireless home telephones. Just like a cellphone, you cannot forward your website. You can sell it to a friend or change it’s name, but cannot forward it.

IP: An IP address is a series of numbers assigned to each device on a computer network- think of it like the postal code of your home. Your IP address tells the mailman which house to go to; however, IP’s can be very long.

DNS: If your website is a house in the online world, your Domain Name System (DNS) would be the address book containing you and your neighbour’s websites.

***Please note: If you change to a Redman site, it may take a couple of hours for it to update on the DNS. Just like if you move to a new neighbourhood, it will take some time before your information appears on the address book.***

Domain Extension: In real estate, location is key. A domain extension is your home’s location within the community. Ask yourself, which neighbourhood do I want to live in? For example: the extension .CA is a Canadian neighbourhood and .AU is an Australian neighbourhood. Consider the demographics of your market before selecting an extension. In this series, we will explain the difference between .CA and .COM. Stay tuned for more!

***Please note: If you want to change from a .ca to a .com it’s like moving to a new house…your mail must be forwarded. Contact Redman Support for more information on how to change your extension.***
